The following list (attached file) is an index of Michael Rock’s excerpts (What does it mean to call a graphic designer an author? What is an author? Is there an auteur in the house? Designer as translator) from Designer as Author (1996). Michael Rock reexamines the nature of the designer and proposes the concept of ‘designer as author’ to broaden and enrich the designer’s role.
According to Rock’s framework, the entire text has been separated into seven sections — what does it mean to call a graphic designer an author? What is an author? Is there an auteur in the house? Power ploys, designer as translator, designer as performer, designer as director — which have been named according to the theme. In this list, in order to be able to dissect the text in detail within the 500 words required for the brief, I have anatomized the first four sections according to the frame order set by Rock.
